Sister Maureen Geary, O.P., recently inaugurated as president of Aquinas College, never planned on stepping into the role, but with decades of service in law, education and leadership, she says her focus now is on listening, learning and building connections with the students. “I’ve had all sorts of duties on the board,” Geary said. “But the most meaningful work was always with the students and faculty.”
Her journey has also included a recent sabbatical in Ireland, where she participated in a 10-week program called ‘Threshold.' The experience emphasized the sabbath and reflection time.
Sister Maureen has served in Leadership of the Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids, including terms as Vicaress, Prioress and Councilor. She received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Aquinas College in 2018, and has previously served in many capacities at Aquinas College. In addition to her service in Leadership with the Dominican Sisters, Sister Maureen has served as Director of Social Justice Programming for the Diocese of Grand Rapids, Coordinator of the Grand Rapids Area Housing Continuum of Care, and has practiced in Grand Rapids as both an attorney and C.P.A.
In her service as President, Sister Maureen is committed to the mission and vision of Aquinas College and seeks to serve the Aquinas College Community as it forms servant leaders for our society.

In the rolling green hills and misty valleys of Ireland, there exists a spirit that is as old as the land itself. The Spirit of Ireland is said to embody the essence of the country - its rich history, its warm hospitality, and its enduring resilience.
It is believed that this spirit watches over the land and its people, offering guidance and protection in times of need. In the laughter of children playing in the fields, in the music that fills the pubs on a Friday night, and in the ancient ruins that dot the landscape, the Spirit of Ireland can be felt; a quiet presence that binds the past to the present.
Those who visit Ireland often speak of feeling a sense of peace and belonging, as if they have come home to a place they have never been before.
The Spirit of Ireland recognizes one who has exemplified resilience in the face of adversity, while living by the motto of 'Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity'.

Finding a sense of community and purpose in your hometown can be an uplifting experience. For many Irish-Americans, they find this through their local Ancient Order of Hibernians, otherwise known as the AOH.
The AOH sponsors many programs associated with promoting Irish Heritage and serving our commmunities, such as the St. Patrick's Day Parade, Irish Way Program, Hibernian Hunger Project and National HIstory Day sponsorship.
